Cereal Haulin'

This is one of those days when "Show and Tell" is appropriate, I think.

I don't know why it took me three days to figure out that Corn Flakes and Raisin Bran were both large enough to qualify for the Kellogg's milk Catalina that is still running through Saturday.

I bought 4 Raisin Bran and 3 Corn Flakes. 2 cereals were .97, the others were $1.47, for a total of $9.29.

I used 2 $1/2 Raisin Bran coupons and a $1.50/2 Corn Flakes coupon, all from the 3/28 RP.

Received: 3 coupons for FREE Gallon of Milk. That’s money!

Final price: $5.79 for 7 cereals, 3 gallons of milk and 3 super cute reusable bags!

Now that's what I've heard called a "perfect storm" when it comes to couponing.  An awesome sale price, high value coupons, a matching catalina deal and freebies thrown in!

So here's another deal scenario for ya:

Purchase 7 Corm Flakes for a total of $9.29
Use 3 $1.50/2 Corn Flakes coupons from the 3/28 RP
Final price: $4.79 for 7 cereals, 3 cool bags and 3 coupons for FREE milk gallons!

  1. Is is bad that I mainly want to do the cereal deal so that I can get the reusable bags??

  2. Now I'm bummed. :-( That was the week I sent my hubby out for the Star Tribunes and he came home with 3 papers and no coupon inserts. No cute bags for us.

  3. Great Find! Did you do this in 1 or 3 transactions?

  4. Where is this at?

  5. This was at Sunmart. You have to do it in 1 transaction to get the 3 free milks.

Brittany, even without the coupons, you'd still be paying $9 for the cereal and 3 milks - in my mind, sill like getting all the cereal for FREE since we buy milk at $3 regularly.

And, no, it's not bad that you want to do it for the bags! You're in good company, I think they are adorable! If you're in Fargo, don't go to Sunmart up on University. They looked at me like I was from the moon when I asked about the bags. 32nd Ave Fargo and 8th St Moorhead stores both have plenty.

  6. 25th St Sunmart is out of Raisin Bran this am. Manager said they will have more after 2pm.

They had a quick sale on some GoGurt (strawberry/kiwi/cherry) for $.99. I was kicking myself that I didn't bring my binder with!!!

  7. I bought four boxes at the 25th street store and didn't get a milk coupon. Do you have to ask for it?

  8. With four boxes (as long as they were Raisin Bran or Corn Flakes) you should have gotten 1 milk coupon from the Catalina machine after the purchase. If it didn't print out, and you bought the right things, just call the Catalina company and they should send you the coupon. Have your receipt when you call them at 888-322-3814.

  9. Hi, Sheila! Thanks for the awesome deal! Just wanted to let you know that Sunmart in WF has the retro bags by the meat/produce area. The lady that was packing my bags said she thought you could only get 2 per purchase but asked and found out I could get all 3, then she thought my nash finch coupon was photocopied (it wasn't but I do take your tip of the fast print option and bw of course to save on ink) and went to call a manager to have him look at it and they were not going to take it but then I said it was not copied and they decided to take it. Everyone was pretty nice about it all so it was okay it was just that someone from my small office at work was right behind me in line throughout this whole 10 minute ordeal! Kind of embarassing but oh well! Did you see the "sweepskates" game they have going on right now? Lastly, on my over long post, I heard that you can freeze milk, which I think I will have to do since we don't drink a lot of milk and the coupons expire on 04/21. Do you know how long it is good for after you freeze, do you thaw at room temp? Thanks again for all you do! You ROCK!

  10. Angela, I am so excited about the "shop like a millionaire" game, it's like play Monopoly at McD's, but you don't have to buy fast food! Also, I've frozen milk often - if you thaw it in the fridge, it takes a long time, so I usually start it on the counter then move it into the fridge, or plan a few days for a gallon to thaw in the frige. I would think it's good about as long as it would be if it hadn't been frozen. Way to go!!

  11. Ok, so I just left the Moorhead Sunmart. I was in the cereal aisle when the manager came by and apologized that they were out of the Apple Jacks and Froot Loops that were advertised, but that he was substituting the 12.2 ounce sized boxes!!! To me that meant that I didn't have to buy 7 boxes of corn flakes and raisin bran! I got 2 boxes corn flakes, 3 boxes apple jacks and 2 boxes froot loops, 3 gallons of milk and 3 bags for $5.79. It is basically the same deal that you did except I had 4 kinds of cereal to choose from instead of 2.

  12. The raisin bran boxes aren't a big enough size for the $1/2 cpn, are they? I thought I checked it in store and they aren't 11.4oz or larger.

  13. Yup, the Raisin Bran advertised was 15 oz. :)

  14. Thanks so much for doing this blog. I just recently discovered FM Cheapskate and I so appreciate the time you put into this. It has helped my family save a lot of money!

  15. Sheila, went on Saturday. Like the post previous mentioned, they were substituting. But they added Rice Krispies, Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes, and 20oz Raisin Bran.
I still had a $1 coupon for Apple Jacks from the dispenser that you mentioned a while back. I used that in conjuction with the $2/2 Raisin Bran. Then, ALL the boxes were ringing up at 97 cents. I got 7 boxes of cereal for an overage of 21 cents. I bought a drink and a card for a total of $2.06. Of course the milk receipt printed. What a great deal. Thanks for posting. You've been a lifesaver.
